The ever-popular Big Carrot opened the doors of its new Beaches location for the first time on Thursday morning to much fanfare and big opening-day crowds. The Big Carrot is a worker-owned natural food market that sells locally-produced, organic, non-GMO food and personal care products. Beachers, who have long made the trek to the Carrot’s original location on Danforth Ave., turned out in droves to welcome the Carrot to the Beach, and to snap up opening day promotions and discounts. Workers handed out (organic, unbleached) goody-bags filled with valuable products to customers and browsers alike, as long lines snaked along aisles filled with shoppers.
Apart from free swag, the Carrot also provided free food samples and a live band, who were unfortunately drowned out by noise from ill-timed construction at the corner of Kingston Rd. & Southwood Dr. The crowd didn’t seem to mind the inconvenience, and business was brisk throughout the morning.
The 6,300 sq. ft. store at 125 Southwood Dr. is the second location for The Big Carrot, which opened its doors in 1983. The original location, Carrot Common at 348 Danforth Ave. has long been a favorite of Beachers.
